IDENTIFYING STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH

Do you sometimes think that you need to think differently about your business, or think “out of the box” – but just don’t know how to go about it?
Are you facing increased competition?
Do you pay a lot of attention to what competitors are doing and find that you and your competitors copy each other or try to surpass each other at the expense of your margins?
Do you attribute slow growth to market conditions?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you may be swimming in a red ocean of competition. While it will always be important to know how to compete in such conditions, organizations also need to have the skills to identify new areas for growth through offerings that bring innovative value to customers. BLUE OCEAN STRATEGY offers an approach and toolkit to systematically “think out of the box” to identify offerings for such growth areas.
Our journey into the world of blue oceans will be experienced over two sessions, giving participants an opportunity to put some of the Blue Ocean Strategy tools into practice between the sessions.
LEARNING LAB 1: in this half-day session, we will discover why Blue Ocean Strategy is different from traditional thinking through an example of a small business in Germany focused on medical supplies for people in wheelchairs. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the tools to their own business and will prepare their “fieldwork” to carry out prior to the next session.
LEARNING LAB 2: in this half-day session, participants will learn how to use the insights developed from their fieldwork to find fresh inspiration, again using tools of Blue Ocean Strategy thinking to guide the way. We will conclude the session with some guidance and tips on implementing Blue Ocean Strategy, so that each participant can develop an Action Plan for his/her own business.
About the speaker:
Member of the Blue Ocean Strategy Network and founder of Bluecrest Consulting, Lauren Mathys specializes in Blue Ocean Strategy thinking and the application of BOS frameworks and tools in business settings.
Prior to starting her own business, Lauren worked for over twenty years in the biopharmaceutical industry, holding a variety of positions including Head of R&D Planning and Control, Corporate Director of Strategic Planning, Head of Business Intelligence / Pharmacoeconomics / Marketing Planning, and Corporate Vice President, Strategic Marketing. Since starting Bluecrest Consulting in 2008, Lauren has been invited to speak at conferences and workshops around the world and regularly runs training programs focused on Blue Ocean Strategy thinking in a variety of industries, including: pharmaceuticals, transportation, food and dairy, beverages, metal commodities, banking, and IT/printing. Lauren has also taught the Blue Ocean Strategy Simulation course to INSEAD MBA students on numerous occasions and is on the faculty for the Blue Ocean Strategy Executive Program at INSEAD.
Lauren obtained her Masters in Business Administration from INSEAD, with Blue Ocean Strategy co-author Professor W. Chan Kim as her Business Policy Professor, and her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.
